Future Laborer Wins Tanana Valley State Fair Baby Contest & Harvest Prince!

Public Employees LIUNA Local 71 employees are training the next generation to take pride in their work.

Fairbanks, AK – The Tanana Valley State Fair kicked off this weekend with the annual baby contest and a clear winner, Baby Jason Benedick.

John Benedick is a State Equipment Fleet (SEF) Mechanic with the State of Alaska Department of Transportation (DOT) at the Peger Road station in Fairbanks, AK, where Local 71 members keep all of our state vehicles running. “Our members work on everything you see out there: heavy duty equipment like graders for dirt and snow work, loaders, forklifts, sanders, dump trucks, the brooms that keep the airports open, paint trucks for striping lanes, light duty cars and trucks, and all the law enforcement vehicles.” said Brian Lashinski, SEF Foreman at DOT Peger Rd., and Local 71 Vice President. He added, “It’s a great feeling to work alongside people who take such pride in their work  every day for the people of Alaska.”

The event took place on Saturday, and long lines of strollers were the gates well before the fair opened. Baby Jason was an early favorite with people texting photos of him to their friends before the judging was over. His mother, Marissa, made a jumpsuit to match daddy’s work uniform complete with nametag and work boots. Baby Jason took the early prize of 1st Place for the baby contest creating quite a buzz. The next round of judging was at 3:30 PM, where he was attendees’ clear choice for Harvest Prince.

In addition to the Benedick family’s personal success, their win promotes the good work of the Public Employees at the AK DOT and the hard-working members of the Local 71 Union. Congratulations to Baby Jason and cheers for the next generation of Alaska Laborers!
