Local 71 Cares & Kids Don’t Float

Fairbanks, AK – Today our union continued our good work supporting water safety by re-stocking the lifejacket loaner boards at the Pioneer Park and Graehl Landing boat launches.

Pictured here are Brian Lashinski, our Public Employees LIUNA Local 71 Vice President, and State Equipment Fleet Foreman with the State of Alaska DOT at Peger Road; and Joleen Nash, Northern Region Dispatcher re-stocking loaner life jackets.

Local 71 has a long history of supporting this program, and the recent drowning on the Chena River was an unfortunate reminder to practice boating safety by always wearing a life jacket. We are getting more flotation devices out to additional communities in time for the holiday weekend and remind everyone that they can find additional resources here at the Office of Boating Safety.

Laborers with LIUNA Locals 942, 341, and Public Employees Local 71 bought a check for $15,000.00 and turkeys to the Fairbanks Food Bank. Ann Weaver, Fairbanks Food Bank CEO, said that they are anticipating 3,300 households will be served locally tomorrow meaning that 12-13,000 people will be fed. Ann elaborated that 40% of those people will be children, and another 20% will likely be elders. This year we helped provided 484 Turkeys. She acknowledged that our labor community comes through every year, and the Food Bank staff know that they can rely on us. “When I get that phone call each year, it just makes my whole heart happy, because this is a huge gift that helps…” This year is especially important given that so many programs have run short or closed in recent months. Members of the local labor unions will also be volunteering tomorrow to pack, distribute, and deliver boxes to those in need. On Thanksgiving we will be helping serve meals at Bobby's Restaurant. Laborers look out for one another. Stand up against workplace aggression before it becomes violence.

May be an image of text that says 'In memory of Amber Czech, a young welder who lost her life to workplace violence SPEAK OUT AGAINST ALL FORMS OF WORKPLACE VIOLENCE LABORERS'

Last week, Amber Czech's life was taken in a senseless act of workplace violence. She is not alone. Workplace violence is a serious safety issue and ranks as the third leading cause of fatal occupational injuries in the U.S. Employers can take steps to reduce workplace violence through policies and procedures that involve risk assessment and training for everyone on the job. Workplace violence of any form must not be tolerated.
