BREAKING NEWS:

PUBLIC PENSIONS PASS ALASKA STATE LEGISLATURE – HEAD TO GOVERNOR

Statement from Bill Meers, Business Manager, Public Employees Local 71

Dear Members,

It is with great pride and excitement that I share this important update with all of you. The Alaska State House has passed concurrence on House Bill 78, the crucial Public Pensions Bill. This means that they agreed with the version of this bill that the Senate passed, and it is now headed to the Governor! This is a significant victory for our union and the future security of all our members.

This bill represents a major step forward in recruiting, retaining, and strengthening our workforce. It means ensuring the hard work each of you put in over the years is honored and supported. And it wouldn’t have happened without unions supporting elected officials who will do the right thing for Alaska’s workers. (Workers who want a pension can now have one, and those who want to keep their 401K can do that too.) Read the bill language that passed here.

Now the bill goes to the Governor. This is a critical moment, and your voice matters more than ever.

The Governor has three options:

  • Sign the bill – this makes the bill become law without waiting.
  • Refuse to sign the bill but let it become law without his signature – this takes effect after a waiting period.
  • Veto the bill – this means the legislature would have to vote to override the veto to make it become law, or a new bill would have to be introduced next year.

I urge every member to reach out to the Governor’s office at this link and express strong support for the immediate signing of House Bill 78. Let the Governor know how important this bill is to you, your family, and your future.

Together, we can ensure that this victory becomes a reality. Stand with me and stand strong for your rights and Feel the Power!

Thank you for your continued dedication and solidarity.
